Reddit Citations Drop Sharply in ChatGPT Search

Reddit appeared much less often in ChatGPT Search citations in mid-August 2026, according to data from AI visibility platform Promptwatch.

Between July 18 and August 7, Reddit had an average share of 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations. Its share fell below 1% on August 14. From August 14 to August 17, the average was only 0.52%. This was a drop of 86.4%.

The change happened quickly after several weeks of stable results. However, the data does not explain why it happened.

The Decline Started Earlier

Promptwatch noticed the first change on August 8. Reddit’s citation share fell from the high-3% range to the mid-2% range.

On the same day, Promptwatch also recorded a change in ChatGPT Search’s query fan-out behavior. Query fan-out is the process of creating extra search queries from a user’s original question.

Reddit’s share dropped again six days later and fell below 1% on August 14. The timing may be important, but it does not prove that the query fan-out change caused the decline.

Promptwatch says the results are not final. It is continuing to watch the trend, and a problem with data collection is still possible.

Google Shows a Slower Change

Reddit also lost some citation share in Google’s AI search products, but the decline was slower.

In Google AI Overviews, Reddit’s share fell gradually from about 2.5% in early July to around 2.1% in August. Google AI Mode followed a similar path. Its decline began near the end of July and continued slowly over the following weeks.

The difference is clear: Reddit’s share in Google declined over time, while its share in ChatGPT Search fell suddenly.

The Reason Is Still Unknown

Promptwatch studied millions of responses collected directly from major AI platforms. Its figures show Reddit’s share of citations among responses that included at least one source.

The study does not look inside ChatGPT’s systems. It cannot tell us why Reddit appeared less often or whether the decline will continue.

The numbers also measure citation share, not website traffic or the total number of times Reddit was mentioned. A lower citation share does not automatically mean that fewer people visited Reddit from AI platforms.

Why This Matters

Reddit has been an important source for AI-generated answers. This sudden decline shows that a website’s visibility in AI search can change within a few days.

It also shows why marketers, publishers, and website owners should check AI citations and referral traffic regularly. Each AI platform should be measured separately because a source may perform differently in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.

It is too early to know whether Reddit’s lower citation share is temporary or long-lasting. For now, the report shows how quickly AI platforms can change the sources they cite.
